A world beyond worlds at Oz ComicCon

Avatar, Batman, Harry Potter, Jedi Knights...I was surrounded by hundreds of them this weekend at one of the country's biggest science fiction, fantasy and pop culture exhibitions in the country - Oz ComicCon. Despite being a mad Xena and Hercules fan, along with other shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, it was the first time I had attended ComicCon; last year I had completely forgotten about Supernova and was gutted after finding out that Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle from Xena) … [Read more...]

I have nunchaku and WILL use them in the zombie apocalypse

If you haven't caught National Geographic Channel's show Doomsday Preppers, then you need to get Foxtel just for that. Although the people featured in it give off a slight sense of cray cray, it makes for fantastic television and actually, some quirky and smart ideas to prepare your family and friends for the end of the world. Each episode showcases about three to four individuals (Americans, mostly) who all have different ideas about what they're preparing for, how civilisation will end, … [Read more...]

“Are you crazy?! Who DOES that?!”

Earlier this month, I came home to an exceedingly wonderful surprise; as I pushed the button to open my garage door, there in my parking spot was a brand new, jet black Trek hybrid road bike - courtesy of my loving husband. As I played briefly with my toy, squealing with delight and flicking the bell to make 'ding' noises, I hurriedly got into my workout wear to meet up with my fitness training crew for a bit of kickboxing. With a smile as big as that evening's moon I delighted in telling … [Read more...]

An ode to the memories…albeit rather demented

A few weeks ago as I was trolling through childhood photos at my parents' place to find a picture of me and my old best friend for a previous post Where is my Nadia?, I came across some hilariously cute prints of myself at pre-primary age. So mum and I thought it would be ideal to re-create one of the photos the best we could on such short notice - mainly for a bit of fun and for some good laughs. It had been a while since my mum had brushed my hair and it hurt like hell...ah, the memories of … [Read more...]

Where has our right to feel safe gone?

This week the Australian public and its media sources have gone haywire over the disappearance and recently found woman Jill Meagher and in the last few days I've heard harrowing stories in the social media world of Aussie women who have faced frightening situations that risked their safety. For my non-Aussie colleagues, one week ago on the night of Saturday, September 22 Irish-born, Melbourne-based ABC staffer Jill went missing. News reports began spilling out calls for information on her … [Read more...]

Is the “nanny state” of Australia babysitting homosexuality?

It boggles my mind in all directions to hear there are still people in today's day and age who stand up against marriage equality, mainly those who use a government view point as their defence. Growing up in a liberal household where I could be who I wanted to be and was taught to accept everybody no matter who they were, I've always thought that as time and society moved forward, so too would policies and laws to accommodate all the changes population goes through. My life has been … [Read more...]

No more fizzle in your shizzle – NUDIES!

My husband and I will be celebrating 13 years together next month, a time so long ago begun when we were young, in love and dreaming the big dreams. Long lasting relationships can sometimes fizzle and many find themselves in a rut of supreme comfort - it's just easier to sit together on the couch and watch a movie then go to the effort on putting on a nice outfit and heading out for a night on the town. It got me thinking that despite enjoying being somewhat of a homebody and on many nights … [Read more...]

Brazilia’s most popular tourist – the beaver

I like to think I have a pretty high pain threshold (but I can't uphold that until I've had my first baby a la naturale) and can handle agony to a certain degree. For those who haven't tried the wonders of the Brazilian wax, I'll happily take the hot strips and half-naked frog-leg position over womanly once-a-month cramps any day. Yes, I will. Waxing "down there" has been common place in numerous cultures for centuries, including ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, Albania and Turkey and because … [Read more...]

Chafing, runner’s diarrhea…yeah, that

Last Tuesday, I aimed for a 6-kms jog around the 'burbs but when I reached that goal I kept going and did just over 11-kms. It made me think about all those embarrassments during running that most don't speak about or ask advice about in sheer terror...so I'm going to brave it all and give you tips to ensure you have a happy and pee-free run, revealing some of my own moments that will draw cringes to your faces. Chafing - isn't it the most ridiculously, uncomfortable feeling in the world? The … [Read more...]
