With two books already under her belt, Perth author Sara Foster has just released her third and much anticipated novel Shallow Breath, which takes Western Australian natives on a nostalgic journey back to their childhoods of the 1980s. The story is set around a number of central characters and just like in Foster’s first book Come Back To Me, each chapter is the point of view of a character, allowing readers to get into each person’s head. The story centres around Desi Priest, a woman … [Read more...]
An emerald on asphalt
I thought the morning was going semi-alright when I got out of bed today. Waking up 15 minutes early was a good start and then the normal routine of hugging and feeding the animals, getting breakfast and lunch ready, then heading out on the road for the daily grind. But alas, I was caught off guard 10 minutes into my commute as I drove down a single lane carriage way and a car going in the opposite direction hit a bird. I'd noticed the bright, green lorikeets - there were three of them … [Read more...]
Where is my Nadia?
There are some people in your life that pass by without a single second thought, making no impact on you and forever forgetting their names, who they were, what they did and when it was. It's a pessimistic thing to say but it's true. How many of you can recall every single childhood friend and teacher you've had in primary school - without looking back at classroom photos? Yeah, I thought so. A very small amount of primary school people stand out for me but there have always been … [Read more...]
Churros and Brazilians…a mix of the best kind
I've always wanted to go to Brazil so the next closest thing for me was heading out with good friend and new food blogger Lise from Feeds and Fun and tagging along on Sunday with my most beautiful Brazilian friend Ana to a local Festa Junina - an annual celebration historically related to the European midsummer and generally held in country towns. Sold out at 600 tickets, we headed straight for the churro stand - why we started with dessert, I'll never know but despite churro popularity in … [Read more...]
Slow and steady like a donkey
At the weekend I participated in the HBF Run for a Reason fun run and achieved a personal best - conquering 14 kilometres non-stop jogging in 1 hr 53 mins 55 seconds. Slow, yes. Walked it, NO! I was so happy and thrilled with my result, knowing I had run that distance all the way. It's the furthest I have ever gone. Overall, I secured position 7512 out of 9406. The original goal was to run 11 or 12 kilometres and then walk the remainder but when I got to the 11 kilometre-mark, I asked myself … [Read more...]
Blackcurrants and petals, cameras and models
Some time ago I met Kell, a highly talented photographer from Blackcurrant Photography who also happens to create stunning handmade jewellery featuring some of Perth's finest and most beautiful flora. She taught me how to use my camera to get the most of my images when I was volunteering at Cat Haven as their public relations officer and social media coordinator, and taking photos of the kitties for pet of the week, Facebook and Twitter. Without Kell's knowledge, I wouldn't have learned about … [Read more...]
Tutus and glow sticks in a relay for life
Last weekend an event was held in Perth that is becoming more and more popular every year - the Cancer Council's Relay for Life. The concept is unique - grab a team of friends and family, camp overnight at an athletics stadium and ensure at least one team member is walking or running the track for 24 hours straight; it symbolises the idea that cancer never stops so those entering the relay will never stop over the course of one day. I've never done it before and have to admit, it was never … [Read more...]
Guest post – Mumchic versus Big Brother
I'd like to introduce Mumchic to the Skinny Cap with Two Sugars blog. Mumchic, otherwise known as Sabeen, is a woman I connected with via the blog world and although we haven't met in a physical sense given she's on one side of the country and I'm on the other, have supported one another through our posts and become great online mates. I find her motivation to write an inspiration in itself and so asked her to be a part of the Skinny Cappers family by putting in her two cents. Tonight, Mumchic … [Read more...]
