A book of inspirations by Aussie Chris Pavey

Australians like to be challenged and author Chris Pavey is no exception. Running Against Time is a piece of work that many may easily relate to as Pavey begins the tale by revealing his unhappiness with weight gain and moving overseas for a few years. It was while in Japan teaching English that he met his now wife Julia and discovered a passion for regaining control of his health and running through the streets of a country not considered his homeland. Pavey tells it like it is – how … [Read more...]

Rescuing myself from a life of death – 17 kgs GONE

2012 was the year of change for me and today, on January 17 2013 I celebrate one of the biggest achievements of mine in the last five years...a 17 kgs weight loss. Yes, 17 kgs of lard, fat, lazy arse flab that I can say good bye to permanently. All it took was one word - dedication. Dedication to be a healthier me so I could start a family with my husband, dedication to change my way of thinking so the great outdoors became my friend not my enemy, dedication to learn how to know my body inside … [Read more...]

The importance of a great running shoe

A boring headline, I know...but it sums up the message I'm trying to get across. And if there's one thing I've learned in my first year of running, it's the importance of a good running shoe. For a few years earlier, when I was trying to run and failed miserably (resulting in the stoppage of that hobby) I bought Mizuno Wave Inspires; as they sat in the closet and only came out for little stints of exercise like dog walking or gardening, I pulled them out of running retirement in January … [Read more...]

First triathlon? Pfft…smash it!

The lead up to my first triathlon at the weekend wasn't incredibly intense - in fact, I just took it in my stride and continued on my normal fitness regime. Perhaps there were one or two extra cycles and a transition training session one Saturday morning, but that's about it. I had done a 300-metre swim about two months ago in a pool and thought to myself that it was alright, slow and steady would win the race and that no matter what, I'd finish it despite me being a very low confident … [Read more...]

“Are you crazy?! Who DOES that?!”

Earlier this month, I came home to an exceedingly wonderful surprise; as I pushed the button to open my garage door, there in my parking spot was a brand new, jet black Trek hybrid road bike - courtesy of my loving husband. As I played briefly with my toy, squealing with delight and flicking the bell to make 'ding' noises, I hurriedly got into my workout wear to meet up with my fitness training crew for a bit of kickboxing. With a smile as big as that evening's moon I delighted in telling … [Read more...]

For the athlete in all of us, Lisa Tamati inspires to the extreme

WIN A COPY - see bottom of post New Zealander Lisa Tamati has done it again with her second publication Running to Extremes, released on September 26. So imagine being told you'd never be able to run again, that all hope was lost and to just … [Read more...]

How I ran 14 kilometres – and survived

I did it! As you may recall from a previous post, Slow and steady like a donkey, I successfully ran 14 kilometres at a run fun in late May. It was the longest distance I had ever run/jogged in my life and it was one of the best feelings of my life when I completed it - a million times better than sitting on the couch, watching a movie, eating Tim Tams, gaining weight and storing fat in my body. Despite the 5am wake up call that morning, the day was oh so memorable. Running is one of those … [Read more...]

Pat Farmer and 21,000 kilometres – an interview

Pat Farmer might be a name you recognise from Australian politics. He was a federal member of parliament, representing the Liberal seat of Macarthur in south-west Sydney from 2001 to 2010 and served in the House of Representatives. Now away from politics, Pat has created himself a global reputation for endurance running and ultra-marathon racing which has seen him break numerous world records, including beating the long tropics run (6307 kilometres in 83 days) by 16 days. His most … [Read more...]

Slow and steady like a donkey

At the weekend I participated in the HBF Run for a Reason fun run and achieved a personal best - conquering 14 kilometres non-stop jogging in 1 hr 53 mins 55 seconds. Slow, yes. Walked it, NO! I was so happy and thrilled with my result, knowing I had run that distance all the way. It's the furthest I have ever gone. Overall, I secured position 7512 out of 9406. The original goal was to run 11 or 12 kilometres and then walk the remainder but when I got to the 11 kilometre-mark, I asked myself … [Read more...]
